EASY Homemade Bagels

Deeply satisfying about making bagels from scratch. Reaallly good.

Ingredients

1. Bagel Dough

  • 3½ cups (420 g) bread flour
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1½ teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar or honey
  • 1¼ cups (300 ml) warm water

2. Boiling

  • Large pot of water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar or honey

3. Optional Toppings

  • Sesame seeds
  • Poppy seeds
  • Everything seasoning
  • Coarse salt

Instructions

In a bowl, combine the bread flour, yeast, salt, and sugar, then add the warm water and mix until a firm dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. The dough should be stiff, not soft.

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and allow it to rise for about 1 hour, until doubled in size.

Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then poke a hole through the centre and gently stretch it into a ring shape.

Place the shaped bagels onto a lined tray and let them rest for 15–20 minutes.

Bring a large pot of water to a gentle boil and add the sugar or honey. Boil the bagels for 30–45 seconds per side, then remove and allow them to drain briefly. The longer the boil, the chewier the bagel.

Place the boiled bagels directly onto parchment and add any toppings while they are still wet.

Bake in a preheated oven at 220°C for 20–25 minutes, until deep golden brown.

Allow the bagels to cool for 10–15 minutes before slicing.

Serving Suggestion: Cream cheese, Salmon and Capers. you will not regret it!

Notes

  • Do not oil the parchment
  • Do not skip the boiling step
  • Bread flour is essential
