Hannelie Goosen’s Marmite and Cheese Scones

These are the scones I grew up with. Salty, cheesy, and full of that unmistakable Marmite flavor. They are simple, comforting, and perfect fresh out of the oven with a little extra butter if you’re feeling indulgent.

Ingredients

1. Muffin Batter

  • 1 cup flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 1 egg

  • 1 cup grated cheese

  • 1 cup milk

  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted

2. Marmite Glaze

  • 1 tablespoon Marmite

  • 1 tablespoon melted butter

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 180°C.

In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and milk.

Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Stir in the grated cheese until evenly distributed throughout the batter.

Spoon the batter into a greased or lined muffin tray.

If using mini muffin tins (fairy muffins), bake for about 10 minutes, or until golden brown. If using regular muffin tins, bake for 15–20 minutes.

While the muffins are baking, mix the Marmite and melted butter together until smooth.

As soon as the muffins come out of the oven, brush the Marmite butter mixture over the tops while they are still warm.

Allow the muffins to cool slightly before serving.

Perfect for breakfast, lunchboxes, or a quick snack any time of day.
